Victoria Junior College

From 2016 to 2017, I studied in Victoria Junior College. At this point I had not starting delving into computing, but I took great interest in the sciences. In fact, I had considered taking up Physics as a major before learning about Computer Science.

Curriculum

I took the PCME combination: H2 Physics, H2 Chemistry, H2 Mathematics, and H2 Economics. While I struggled with Economics, I managed to attain good grades overall at the 'A' Levels.

SubjectGrade
H2 PhysicsA
H2 ChemistryA
H2 MathematicsA
H2 EconomicsA

Co-curricular

In year 1, I joined StudioV, a filmmaking club in VJC that produces short films and participates in film competitions. StudioV also provides publicity services for other CCAs in VJC to help them produce high quality videos. As a club, we function autonomously and get to decide the projects to take up. In our year, we produced short films that focused on emotions.

Exco

I ran for and took up position in the StudioV Exco as the Head of Training. I was responsible for planning the training structure and preparing the materials for developing the skill level of our members. We made sure to train all members to attain a baseline skill level that will allow them to operate independently on projects, but I also placed an emphasis on helping members to specialise in certain areas they are interested in, such as CGI, VFX, animation, etc. While I am not experienced in these areas, I helped to provide resources and links to help them start their self-directed learning.

Projects

The bulk of the StudioV experience was in self-initiated film projects. We will plan, organise, film, edit and publish our short films with themes that we decide.

This was our submission for MusicFest 2017. It is a music video written and filmed by ourselves, and the cast was fully comprised of StudioV members. This entry won the first prize in the Music Video category.

Following MusicFest, we produced this short film to address the stress and lack of individuality and personality felt by students at that time. Through this video we hoped to help them find their place in life. We received many emails from grateful Victorians who watched and felt that it was relatable.

Friends

In my 2 years, I spent most of my time in VJC with StudioV, working on the projects (sometimes till late night). As we all worked together, bouncing ideas and solving problems, we became much better friends. Being a small club with under 20 members, we quickly became a tight knit group who would spend all out time after school together. This was the highlight of my VJC years.
